MET GALA LOOKS

When The Met is Teyana Taylor’d to you, it’s the moment we were waiting on."

Ah, the Met Gala fashion's most extravagant night out. It’s where creativity meets couture, where designers flex their design muscles, and attendees become walking art pieces.

This year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style", was a celebration of black dandyism and the role of clothing in shaping black identities in the Atlantic diaspora. It allowed attendees to honour the theme’s cultural significance while serving unforgettable looks.

But not everyone understood the assignment. Let’s be real, while we love seeing breathtaking ensembles on the red carpet, there are always a few outfits that leave us scratching our heads. This year was no different.

From mismatched interpretations to missed opportunities, here are the looks that landed on our worst-dressed list from the 2025 Met Gala.

Andrew Scott: Sunday best, not Gala best

Andrew Scott: Sunday best, not Gala best

Andrew Scott, our beloved Hot Priest, gave us... church vibes? Dressed in a custom mint green suit by Otto Kern, featuring a red vest, a yellow-green patterned tie, and black-and-white dress shoes, the look screamed “weddings, christenings, and Christmas” rather than high fashion.

While we appreciate the effort to bring colour to the red carpet, this look felt more like a hand-me-down from your uncle that he wears to every formal event.

Scott, you’re a style king, but this one? A miss.

Sydney Sweeney: Stunning... But off-theme

Sydney Sweeney: Stunning ... but off-theme

Sydney Sweeney floated onto the red carpet in a custom black beaded Miu Miu gown that paid homage to Kim Novak.

The dress was classic and elegant, with short sleeves, fringe detailing, and a keyhole cutout. Her hair? Impeccable. But the look?

It did nothing for the theme. Sweeney, we love you, but this ensemble felt more like “Old Hollywood glam” than a nod to black dandyism. Gorgeous, yes. On-theme? No.

Fashion darling Cynthia Erivo is known for her high-fashion risks, but this custom Givenchy look was... perplexing.

Cynthia Erivo: Where’s the opulence?

Fashion darling Cynthia Erivo is known for her high-fashion risks, but this custom Givenchy look was... perplexing.

The sculptural corset bodice, covered in silver gems and ruby-red accents, was undoubtedly striking. But what about this screamed black opulence or dandyism?

It felt more alien warrior princess than a tribute to black tailoring. Erivo, you’re a queen, but this one missed the cultural mark.

Kylie Jenner, dressed in custom Ferragamo, played it way too safe.

Kylie Jenner: Playing it too safe

Kylie Jenner, dressed in custom Ferragamo, played it way too safe.

Her sheer, waist-hugging gown with mesh detailing and a simple silhouette was fine, but fine isn’t what the Met Gala is about. Compared to her sisters, Kim and Kendall, who nailed the theme, Kylie’s look felt uninspired.

The Met Gala is a night to take risks, and while Kylie’s dress was pretty, it felt like something we’ve seen a million times before. Yawn.

Gigi Hadid paid homage to Josephine Baker in a custom Miu Miu liquid gold halter gown dotted with multicoloured beads.

Gigi Hadid: Golden tinfoil?

Gigi Hadid paid homage to Josephine Baker in a custom Miu Miu liquid gold halter gown dotted with multicoloured beads. On paper, it sounds perfect for the theme.

But in execution? Internet critics weren’t wrong when they said she looked like a piece of golden tinfoil. The shimmering gown, with its long train and drop-waist ruching, felt more costume-y than couture.

Hadid, we know you’re capable of stunning red carpet moments, but this one didn’t shine as brightly as it could have.

Charli XCX stepped onto the carpet in custom Ann Demeulemeester: a black tailored suit jacket paired with a sheer skirt, long trail, and over-the-knee boots.

Charli XCX: Gothic glam overload

Charli XCX stepped onto the carpet in custom Ann Demeulemeester: a black tailored suit jacket paired with a sheer skirt, long trail, and over-the-knee boots.

She topped it off with a feathered hairpiece for a touch of gothic glamour. But how was this in line with black dandyism?

While the look was bold and undeniably, it felt out of place for the night’s theme.

Doja Cat, aka Zandile, took the 2025 Met Gala theme and... made it her own.

Doja Cat, aka Zandile, took the 2025 Met Gala theme and... made it her own.

She wore a gigantic black pinstriped suit with exaggerated shoulder pads and a cheetah-print bodice. While the animal print was a tongue-in-cheek nod to black culture, the overall look felt messy.

Thankfully, her flawless makeup and hair saved the day, proving that she can still serve face, even if the outfit didn’t deliver.

The Met Gala is a night where fashion dreams come to life or crash and burn.

While this year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, provided a powerful platform for cultural celebration, not every celebrity rose to the occasion.

But hey, fashion is subjective, right? For every critic, there’s a fan who loves these looks.

And at the end of the day, the fun of the Met Gala is that it gets us all talking, whether we’re praising or playfully roasting.
